A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM :
I am writing a JNI-based C++ application that loads JVM.DLL. This application loads the Java Jetty web server, which in turn loads a Java web application (packaged as .war file) from the Jetty webapps directory.

When testing this application under the Java 7 JRE 64-bit, the application works fine.

When run under Java 8, the JVM fatally crashes. If Jetty is started with the Java.exe supplied with Java 8, then it works successfully with no crash. This would tend to indicate a problem in my C++ JNI code, however, this very same program works successfully with Java 7.

(Also, this very same C++ JNI program works successfully when the platform is Windows 7 64-bit and Java 8 JVM 64-bit.)

The error report generated by the Java 8 JVM indicates the fatal access violation occurred when calling:

java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged()

and specifically at:

sun.management.DiagnosticCommandImpl.getDiagnosticCommandInfo()

THE PROBLEM WAS REPRODUCIBLE WITH -Xint FLAG: Did not try

THE PROBLEM WAS REPRODUCIBLE WITH -server FLAG: Yes

REGRESSION.  Last worked in version 7u51

STEPS TO FOLLOW TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM :
  To reproduce this program would require running my C++ JNI program where it attempts to have Jetty load a particular Spring-based web app. I simplified the C++ JNI program to a single file consisting of around 200 lines of code and can be made available.

EXPECTED VERSUS ACTUAL BEHAVIOR :
The JVM crashes fatally due to an access violation fault.

Revert from using Java 8 JVM back to using Java 7 JVM. This is acceptable as the Jetty annotation processing of .class files is not yet compatible to Java 8. Am reporting this issue out of concern for insuring stability of Java 8.

I was not able to reproduce this as originally reported. I managed to create the launcher submitted as well as launching jetty with it. It might be the case that we also need the specific jetty application the user is trying (looks like its using neo4j and others). I have also tried to repro this using neo4j (this component have code paths to the Java_sun_management_DiagnosticCommandImpl_getDiagnosticCommandInfo), but I am unable to reproduce the crash. If I *force* OOM conditions in the debugger by overwriting return values, i get somewhat like the issue reported although not quite... /Markus

There is a native module introduced in JDK8, sun\management\DiagnosticCommandImpl.c. Inspecting the .mdmp files from one of the nightlies, we see that the problematic address, such as ffffffff`804b7f70 is actually on the stack. Now, it is not directly translatable to where this address came from, since x64 Windows relies on fastcall calling convention and does not pass all params on the stack. In addition, i have managed to occasionally reproduce the issue nsk/stress/jck60/jck60014 locally. Out of ~300 iterations, i got about 10 crashes which has this same pattern as above. If we inspect the code in Java_sun_management_DiagnosticCommandImpl_getDiagnosticCommandInfo, there are a number of locations where the code has the following pattern: ... if (result == NULL) { free(dcmd_info_array); JNU_ThrowOutOfMemoryError(env, 0); } for (i=0; i<num_commands; i++) { args = getDiagnosticCommandArgumentInfoArray(env, (*env)->GetObjectArrayElement(env,commands,i), dcmd_info_array[i].num_arguments); ... The problem here is the construct with trying to report OOM via JNU_ThrowOutOfMemoryError(env, 0). This is not a macro, but a function call, which means the code will continue in the for loop and continue to use the dmd_info_array - even though it has already been freed. It *might* be that this is the reason of these crashes, but I would like to confirm this if possible. The lead on a potential OOM happening, and the crash happening as a side effect of this, could be since the nsk/stress/jck60/jck60014 is being run with -XX:NativeMemoryTracking=detail which is quite memory intense on the native side. Out of running 300 iterations during the night, i got 0 crashes. I am still unsure if this is the real issue though so I am still running iterations with conditional breakpoints on OOM to see if we can trace this down further.
