Windows 8 is running inside an OS that is running on a physycal machine.

i got the same error on a vm running linux also, but NOT with the stripped java file that i am providing with this report (running linux 64bit version of the same jdk - Linux matilda 3.2.0-51-generic #77-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 24 20:18:19 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux)

A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM :
application crashes shortly after startup.
Apparently C2 compiler crashes

THE PROBLEM WAS REPRODUCIBLE WITH -Xint FLAG: No

THE PROBLEM WAS REPRODUCIBLE WITH -server FLAG: Yes

STEPS TO FOLLOW TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM :
start provider app with the parameters
java -server -Xms128M -Xmx128M -XX:+PrintCommandLineFlags -XX:+AggressiveOpts -XX:+AggressiveHeap -XX:+UnlockDiagnosticVMOptions -XX:+PrintInlining -cp . ro.derbederos.hlfe.parser.Benchmark

EXPECTED VERSUS ACTUAL BEHAVIOR :
application should end up normally after 5-10 secs but it crashes with
 Error: ShouldNotReachHere().

Apparently on linux box the C2 compiler is not triggered on the example. I think On stack replacement doesn;t take place and execution takes ~30 secs instead of 5 like on windows box.

on windows box PrintCommandLineFlags  option reveals a parameter which does not appear as set on the linux box:
-XX:-UseLargePagesIndividualAllocation

also as you see below on windows box there is a line saying:

on linux box, when i get the error, it states compile:hpp:420 without the  " opto/ "   string in front of it.

It is only jdk7u40/hs24 problem, it is explained in 8019313 bug description (GrowableArray::at() different declaration). It has also proposed fix (not complete). http://cr.openjdk.java.net/~goetz/webrevs/fix_inline_trace/ I would prefer to see common fix (use adr_at()) in jdk8 and jdk7. It is blocker for my investigation of P2 8024830 bug. I need to find inlining to reproduce the failure and I can't because of this bug! Roland, how difficult is to fix it?

7u40-defer-request Justification: There is a workaround (remove PrintInlining) and the flag is meant for debugging which is less critical for production use.
