EVALUATION This test relies on the time taken to execute to infer that layout is not being run unnecessarily. Starting as of b74 it really does look like it that maybe happening. In the following numbers only the third case is supposed to be "lengthy". /java/re/jdk/1.7.0/promoted/all/b73/binaries/solaris-sparc/bin/java CombiningPerf start atime: 784.2388 length: 36 ftime: 791.6148 length: 32 xtime: 4830.101 length: 37 /java/re/jdk/1.7.0/promoted/all/b74/binaries/solaris-sparc/bin/java CombiningPerf start atime: 5916.8958 length: 36 ftime: 4777.5716 length: 32 xtime: 4833.6194 length: 37 b74 did have a couple of changes to the ICU layout engine, so I'm reassigning to the right engineer for that.
