Description
OpenJDK build uses binary version of closed T2K library to perform text rasterization.

This encumbrance should be eliminated and open source library should be used instead.
Freetype seems to be good choice.

SUGGESTED FIX http://sa.sfbay.sun.com/projects/java2d_data/7/6570735.4
23-07-2007

EVALUATION Proposed solution is to provide basic support for pluggable rasterizers. So, freetype can be used for OpenJDK and Sun's JDK can keep using T2K until Freetype will be improved to provide comparable quality of rasterization for all fonts.
