Description

Name: nt126004			Date: 12/10/2002

FULL PRODUCT VERSION :
java version "1.4.1"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.1-b21)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.1-b21, mixed mode)

FULL OPERATING SYSTEM VERSION :
Microsoft Windows 2000 [Version 5.00.2195]

A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM :
Java Web Start has a problem installing applications with a
long URL. Windows has a limitation of 255 characters for
the entire file path. If the path is too long a
FileNotFoundException is thrown.

STEPS TO FOLLOW TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM :
1. Create a JNLP with a very long URL for the codebase,
longer than 255 characters.
2. Run the JNLP application.
3. View the error.

EXPECTED VERSUS ACTUAL BEHAVIOR :
Shouldn't have this limitation, should handle caching by
creating directories based on the URL, should create some
sort of ID system instead.

REPRODUCIBILITY :
This bug can be reproduced always.

        System.exit(0);
        }
}

CUSTOMER WORKAROUND :
There is no way other than to limit the size of the URL to
a somewhat smaller size.

EVALUATION This problem is not new to mantis, and it dosn't meet any of the show-stopper criteria. ###@###.### 2002-12-11 This would require fundamentally changing the cache format. Since we plan to merge the plugin and javaws caches in the future (but not in tiger) we decided to put this off till then ###@###.### 2003-06-19 this should be included in the cache redesign in mustang ###@###.### 2004-12-07 20:01:31 GMT this will be fixed by the new download engine/cache in mustang ###@###.### 2005-1-25 19:19:03 GMT this is fixed as part of 4802551: Consolidate Download Engine and Cache from plugin and webstart ###@###.### 2005-04-01 23:31:36 GMT
