Currently, the Java Sound API only supports sound banks contained in RMF files. RMF is a proprietary, non-published file format and the editor has to be bought at beatnik.com. Furthermore, RMF files are not widely used. 

The industry standards DLS (Downloadable Sounds, http://www.midi.org ) and SoundFont ( http://www.soundfont.com ) are in wide use, and the file format is available to the public.

EVALUATION ###@###.### 2002-04-25 Supporting open standards is the way to go for Java. Furthermore, the JRE edition may make use of the soundbank delievered with Windows, enabling MIDI synthesis in the JRE without adding download size. ###@###.### 2003-07-23 Not enough time for tiger time frame.
