Locale support for Laos should be added to the JDK. This includes:

- Adding a locale data file for Laos (easy)
- Enhancing TextLayout and JTextComponent to handle the reordering
issues required to present Lao text properly.
- Possibly providing input method support.

This is very low priority; I'm filing it just for completeness.

EVALUATION Even though we don't currently have a plan to support Lao locale, Lao seems to be displayed correctly if you have Lao OpenType fonts (e.g., http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/laofoss/) with Java 5's fallback font mechanism. Also with the upcoming Java 6, you could provide Lao locale data through the Locale Sensitive Services SPI feature.

EVALUATION Laos support should be added. john.oconner@Eng 2000-02-18 No. Laos is so far down on the priority list that it won't be added any time soon. Let's be honest and say "will not fix". norbert.lindenberg@Eng 2000-07-26
