See http://mail.openjdk.java.net/pipermail/jdk8u-dev/2015-May/003523.html Changes were made to the splashscreen code in an unconditional manner for the giflib 5 upgrade, breaking builds which use a system giflib < 5. We've had conditional code in IcedTea for a while to support early adopters of giflib 5 and will bring that patch upstream.
