Description
We have had a couple of crashes in the WatcherThread:

To avoid future crashes, add crash protection to the WatcherThread.

7u40-critical-request justification: This implements a workaround but not fix for JDK-8016564. Which is a release blocker for 7u40. This workaround should make us meet release criteria. The fix is understood and on it's way to review. SQE is running pre-commit tests.
