See comments section. This is the remaining part of the
problem report that started with bug 6558100.

The corresponding escalation (#1-21504391) should also probably
be associated with this bug id. This bug id has been created
so as to separate the performance issue from the correctness
issue addressed in 6558100.

EVALUATION There are some interesting performance ideas to pursue here if it is determined that this is still an issue for some customers. I'll therefore convert this to an RFE but let it stay on our radar for potential performance work, while we check with the original customer who opened the case so as to get current data to inform our strategy.
