This is a follow-up to 4233634: "Java Sound should allow / support multi-channel audio".

In 1.5, support for all installed soundcards was added with the DirectAudio mixers. That allows usage of all soundcards, and if they provide multi-channel, they can be used from Java Sound. However, there is no API in Java Sound to assign specific channels. For example, one would like to assign a certain channel to rear, center, front, left, right, etc., or to query the default locations of the speakers. Similar functionality is useful for recording: which channels are used for recording.
