Description

Name: bsT130419 Date: 09/13/2001

java version "1.4.0-beta"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.0-beta-b65)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.0-beta-b65, mixed mode)

VolatileImage does not work for Linux or Solaris (see Bug #4498974 for details
on why not).

VolatileImage is very nice for windows, but apparantly only for windows. This
means that the promise of using VolatileImage and Fullscreen mode to allow
robust development of multi-platform games and animations has been badly
undercut. The workaround provided in Bug #4498974 provides no measureble
speedup under Linux.

I request that, even given the difficulties in its implementation, that a
VolatileImage be produced that works under non-windows operating systems.

If that is not going to be done, then the documentation for VolatileImage should
clearly indicate that it does not work for Unices, to allow developers to
adequately judge its usefulness to them.

WORK AROUND Name: bsT130419 Date: 09/13/2001 None. For me at least, the workaround in 4498974 provides no relief. ======================================================================
