Description
A DESCRIPTION OF THE Bug :
Normally I am logged in to vista as standard user but not as admin.

Every time Java reports that an update is available, I am asked for the admin password of my system.

If it is given, update procedure starts but is aborted because " download of installation files " fails.
When logged in as admin, download and update are successful.

EXPECTED VERSUS ACTUAL BEHAVIOR :
EXPECTED -
either display a message to login as admin before updating java (brrr, then we don't need standard users)

or:

Store the temporary download files anywhere but NOT in the admin area where a standard user has no rights!
Comments
Closed, won't fix. Given we have gone past EOPU and AU is no longer a component of 7u resolving this issue no longer makes sense. If there are issues with this position, please open a new/clarifying issue.

As stated, fixed in 8, but the backport is massive and risky.

Requesting deferral from 13_03. We have a fix for this issue, however is pervasive enough to present substantial risk for CPU13_03.

The fix for this bug is a backport for a JDK8 feature, and quite substantial...not in scope for 7u25.

Just because this is an old issue does not mean we should not do anything about it for JDK7. The current focus on security by the community (and not just on Java) has prompted many people to operate in a similar manner as the reporter. Is there some way we can simply improve the message so that the user is not taken down the path to an known error? Note that this poor behavior has been publicized in the press and affects the public's impression of Java's security and quality.

Please add workaround to the bug. Is workaround to run under admin privileges?

We are actively triaging the problem to understand the root cause. However, this cannot be a stopper for this release as we are seeing that it is reproducible when autoupdating to 7u17.Needs to be fixed/addressed immediately after this release. GGG

This issue is reproducible on Win7 64 bit for both manual update (Update tab at Java Control Panel) and scheduled auto update. Tried the following scenarios: 1. Manual update 7u2 -> 7u17 2. Auto update 7u2 ->7u17 3. Manual update 7u7 -> 7u17 4. Auto update 7u11 ->7u17 For all of the above, "Failed to download required installation files." error prompt appears when a standard user clicks on AU bubble and provides admin user id/password via UAC prompt. On initial evaluation, it looks like xml download fails and returns the error message ( "Failed to download required installation files.") when the user is elevated to admin privileges from a standard/ limited user. The error seems to appear from DownloadFiles() function in jucheck.exe.

This does not appear to be a regression. Given there are existing workarounds, requesting deferral to 13_03.
