A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM :
  Bug ID 6972329 was closed early with the comment "If there is any new information, and it suggests a JDK bug, then please re-open this bug".   New information was submitted on AUg 27 and Sep 21 by different users (I was neither of them).   It's not clear how to reopen.


REPRODUCIBILITY :
This bug can be reproduced always.

EVALUATION There is no new information here. As per the evaluation in 6972329, the user.name and user.home properties default to "?" when lookup of the user fails. Arguably the VM should just not startup when this happens. The issue in 6972329 seems to be that the submitter of that bug is using a 64-bit system configured to use LDAP but he/she doesn't have the 32-bit LDAP NSS library installed.
