EXTRA RELEVANT SYSTEM CONFIGURATION :
Tried suggestions on installshield site; in particular, removed "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\xxx" (forget the name of the subdir - but what was recommended on installshield troubleshooting link)

A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM :
While installing Java 1.4.2_2 SE for Windows,  I get this error:
(internal error 2203.  C:\WINDOWS\Installer\7db5de.ipi ������2147287035)

This seems to happen with either the Internet installation, or the local installation.

This also happened after trying some suggestions on Installshield site.

After the first failed attempt. 1.4.2_02 appeared in the "Add/Remove" database (the registry).   Removing it seemed to "do something";  after following failures, it did not appear in the registry, nor was a C:\jdk1.4.2_02 directory created.

STEPS TO FOLLOW TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM :
Download and comence install.   After license acceptance, componenet selection, destination selection, and browser association dialogs (all left at default), installation seems to proceed.  At the end (progress bar near end), Internal Error announced thru a dialog window.  Upon releasing that dialog box with "OK", the installer dialog progresses to "Installation - interrupted", and the "Finish" button appears.

EXPECTED VERSUS ACTUAL BEHAVIOR :
EXPECTED -
Succesful installation.
ACTUAL -
No installation!

This bug can be reproduced always.

WORK AROUND This solution involves changing permissions settings for certain folders. You should be logged in as administrator throughout this process. Change permissions for the C:\WINDOWS\Installer or C:\WINNT\Installer folder, the C:\TEMP or C:\WINDOWS\TEMP and TEMP\Installer directories to allow SYSTEM and the current user Full Control: 1. Open Windows Explorer. Browse to your C:\Windows or C:\WINNT folder. 2. Go to the Tools > Options menu, and select View. Select 'Show hidden files and folders' radio button, and uncheck the 'Hide protected operating system files' checkbox. If you are on Windows XP, you may also have to disable 'Simple file sharing (recommended)' to see the Security tab in the next step. 3. Right-click on the Installer folder and choose Properties. Click the Security tab. 4. Verify that the following permissions are set and that these user groups are listed: ADMINISTRATORS group: Full control (all boxes checked) EVERYONE group: Read & Execute List Folder Contents Read SYSTEM group: Full control (all boxes checked) If one of these user groups is not listed, you may have to ADD it by clicking the Add button in the upper-right corner of the Security Properties dialog box. Make sure the checkbox at the bottom of the Security Properties dialog box, marked 'Allow inheritable permissions from parent to propagate to this object' is checked.
