A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM :
I can not get the off-line installer of the J2SDK 1.4.2_01 or the net based installer of the JRE 1.4.2_01 to install. When the installation program tries to finish the install, it reports the following error message and then exits out:

Error - Java (TM) Update (window title)
Java (TM) Update fails to apply changes to your system.

When I re-run the install, the Windows Installer brings up the Modify (or Repair) and Remove window, where I can either Modify the install or Remove the install. If I do the Modify, I get the same error. If I do the Remove, the program removes OK.

I have installed J2SDK 1.4.1_05 instead.
